Description

Purpose

Assist with work on a variety of transportation and/or planning design projects under direct supervision of an experienced professional engineer.

Key Responsibilities

Do the Work

  • Operate Computer Aided Design (CAD), including creating, updating and drafting signal and roadway improvement plans.   

  • Develop drawings and renderings for use in reports, public meetings, and client-focused materials.

  • Maintain knowledge of the integration of engineering, planning, street design, and bicycle and pedestrian oriented planning.

  • Use computer-generated graphics to assist with visualization of ideas.

  • Draft traffic signal design plans and tabulation sheets in accordance with established company standards. 

  • Draft conceptual and final roadway improvement plans in accordance with established company standards. 

  • Complete field views for gathering data and measurements to use in preparing engineering plans.   

  • Maintain efficient and organized project documents.

  • Assist in the preparation of engineer estimates, specifications, and project bid manuals. 

  • Prepare exhibits for reports, public meetings or presentations.

  • Observe and document construction activity in the field.

  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Education, Work Experience, Licensure/Certifications, and Technical Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent commensurate experience required.

  • Associate or bachelor's degree, or completion of technical trade school in Engineering Technology, CAD, drafting or related field.

  • Minimum of five or more (5+) years of relevant industry-related experience.

  • Knowledge of CAD and manual drafting principles, methods, and techniques. 

  • Working knowledge of appropriate CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD, Civil3D, MicroStation, Open Roads).

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Valid state driver's license and ability to successfully pass a motor vehicle check or reliable form of transportation to/from the office and/or project site strongly preferred.

Leadership and Direction

  • Perform work under limited supervision. Receive direction on complex assignments with general guidance on execution. Work is generally reviewed by more senior staff to ensure application of sound techniques and principles. Review work produced by staff for quality assurance.

  • Position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities but will serve as a lead/resource among a team of colleagues in equivalent roles to share technical proficiency, guidance, and mentorship. May occasionally assist in delegation of assignments or provide feedback to managers.

  • Assist in mentoring junior designers and CAD technicians on the design and drafting of preliminary and final plans.

At the Operational and Company Level

  • Collaborate with peers, engineering and/or planning teams, and project managers to ensure processes are followed and to ensure quality and timely project completion.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Primarily indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.

  • Mobility around an office environment.

  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • Occasional outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.

  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Frequent and prolonged use of data collection equipment and/or drones, necessitating walking the assigned study area to complete data collection over the course of several hours.

  • Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.

  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.

  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds.

  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
